Mission
We drive the circular economy of organic materials by offering industrial-scale processes to produce eco-friendly and safe growing media, fertilizers, and soil improvers, enhancing global food production
Vision
In 2028, Biopallo will be the most advanced supplier of aerobic biomass processing equipment and microbiological inoculants in Europe, with several reference installations in the Nordics and the EU
Driving the Change
Biopallo was founded in 2001 by mechanical engineer Claus Roström and entrepreneur Matti Saastamoinen, both united by a passion for environmental impact. Inspired by changes in the natural environment of North Savo, Matti became deeply interested in water quality, agriculture, artificial fertilizers, and soil care. Claus, in turn, was working on microbial processes in the 1990s and grew determined to develop a fast, aerobic composting solution for organic waste.
By 2004, the first pilot reactor was built, capable of processing various biomasses into sanitized raw compost. Although the results were promising, the market wasn’t yet ready. A turning point came in 2017, when regulatory changes shifted industry attitudes and Biopallo welcomed its first customer. Around this time, environmental technology innovator Anssi Suhonen joined the team.
In 2018, Business Finland awarded funding for a major product development project. Kaija Saastamoinen, with 30 years of international project finance experience at Normet, stepped in as CEO, while NHL legend Kimmo Timonen joined as an investor. The company gained traction, but the true commercial breakthrough was still ahead.
In early 2024, North Savo Startup Fund managed by Nostetta Ventures Oy and a group of angel investors backed Biopallo Systems Oy in a successful financing round. At the same time, former Kekkilä executive Toni Luoma was appointed CEO. With a sharper strategy and extensive pilot-scale trials proving industrial performance, Biopallo is now positioned for large-scale impact.
