Leading Change
Biopallo was founded in 2001 when engineer Claus Roström met entrepreneur Matti Saastamoinen.
The beautiful, clean waters of North Savo were becoming more polluted throughout Matti’s youth, so he started to seek solutions to improve water quality. All this led to the study of agriculture, artificial fertilizers, soil and its management.
In the 1990s, Claus worked on various microbiology projects and was excited to look for an aerobic process for the rapid composting of waste.
In 2004, a pilot reactor was deployed to treat various biomasses using the Biopallo technologies and methods. The organic biomasses were decomposed into hygienic, raw compost. The results were excellent, but waste streams were not yet available. The Organic Waste Landfill Prohibition Act, which entered into force in 2016, brought changes in attitudes. The year 2017 brought the first customer, as well as environmental technology product developer Anssi Suhonen, into Biopallo.
Business Finland provided funding for a product development project at the beginning of 2018, when Kaija Saastamoinen became CEO: She has worked at Normet's for 30 years and has conducted international financial projects.
